Patience. I actually suck at video games (in general), but there's something about that game that keeps me going. Even on my 500th time dying on the same part, I realize that it was my fault (except when something pops out of nowhere, but that tends to happen early on so by my tenth time going through a certain part the cheapness is gone and my skill is the only obstacle.)
BUT NONE OF YOU CARE AAAAAAAUGH WHY DO I TYPE SUCH USELESSNESS

Nah, I care, that's actually kind of impressive. I straight up don't have the patience to bother with that game. It doesn't strike me as...fun...but I appreciate the fact that it was made.

I always liked the quirky and unique bonus stages in all the early Sonic games. Gave them a bit of depth. I guess I could call it an accomplishment that I can achieve Super Sonic before the end of Hydrocity Zone in S3K. I know where all the bonus stage rings are hidden, and there are exactly enough to get all 7 emeralds before Marble Gardens (provided you don't fuck any of them up).
What's sad is I fucked them up almost constantly...I never got further in the game than Carnival Night Zone (there was one particular spinning platform I always ended up stuck at...), and even then, I don't think I ever had more than 4 emeralds.

This mother fucker had me stumped for YEARS. I think the first time I managed to get past it was by severe perseverance and dumb luck, and I didn't figure out how it was SUPPOSED to be done until much later.

Wow, I'm not the only one? That's hilarious...to be honest, though, I still DON'T know how you're supposed to get past that point. Once I got stuck there, I put down the game in frustration and didn't bother with it again.

What, that's all it is? Shit. I was playing two-player with my friend, and we thought it had to do with timing jumps so that we jumped when it was at the apex and landed when it was falling.

No, it really is just "hold up, then down".

When I played it was either get my brother to help as tails time the jumps, or hope to god I could get a bubble shield and hold onto it and just bounce until I finally made it up.

I did the same thing for a long time (the jumping thing). I actually got it to work by a freak accident, after trying for hours.
But Jim's right, all you had to do was stand on it and press up and down. lol.

My friend and I almost got the jump timing to work, which is also why we thought that was the proper way to do it. When you have a solution that appears to be almost working, it's easy to convince yourself you must be doing something right even if you're dead wrong. I feel like an idiot now, but honestly, that's just bad game design. There weren't really any cues that that was what you had to do, and it's not like it was meant to be that much of a puzzle.

1 - This is goddamn hard.
2 - I also beat it.
3 - The OST is fucking amazing.

Summarization of Half Minute Hero:
It's awesome.
Or so I heard.

8-bit graphicy RPG where each part of it gives you 30 seconds to beat it (you can get more time within a part, but you start off with 30). [video]
