ChaoticFox wrote: I've had it that way before, but I kind of like having a gamer panel up at the top. It's non-obtrusive, and quicker to access. I mostly only keep it there for aesthetic value. Depending on my wallpaper, sometimes I'll drag them back to the "Games" folder.
I also like to keep a full icon panel on the left, so that when I save things to my desktop, they appear at the top of the screen, rather than at the bottom where the icons leave off (like they would on Megatheist's). I don't like to mix my standard icon set with temporary files. It's an OCD thing. If I have to have icons there, I might as well take up the entire column.
I like to see the picture and I'm kind of a neat freak about my computer anyway. The Second Icon Down says "Lappy 1T" I keep everything there and have immediate access. I used to do the full Column touch the bottom thing but I can't stand Icons that I can put on the Quick Access tray to the right of the Start button (soon to be something else, Thanks StinkDude.) or just plain don't really use. My desktop is for programs and I try to keep my workspace clean at all times. If I can get around fast enough then I'll delete an Icon or find a way to do so (like with My Docs and My Compy.). I guess it's an Aesthetic / OCD thing. Less is more so to speak.

Normally, I prefer very simple, minimalist wallpapers. This generally prevents icons clashing with the image. Even if my desktop were completely blank, I wouldn't want a "busy" background. The one I just posted is actually almost too much... I'll probably change it to something simpler very soon.
My left side column is only stocked with regularly used programs I don't want to hunt for (and in the case of VLC, Irfanview, and PhotoImpression - programs that I activate by dropping another file on top of them)
I also have this nostalgic "need" for My Comp/Docs/Network. I think it's a remnant from my Windows 95 days, thinking that those things just HAVE to be there for my computer to be in optimum functioning condition (going to my comp. from the start menu makes me feel dirty)
My quick tray is reserved specifically for media player, Firefox, and messengers: The meat and potatoes of my computing experience.
Also: "Show desktop" is officially my favorite shortcut/icon EVER.

Yeah... pretty much because as soon as I download something I just save it to the desktop.

I do the same thing, GM... but eventually I organize them and put them in their proper place. Your desktop frightens me!
@Jigger: That is incredible art. Do you know who the artist is?

I guess I'll get in on it...
I don't like a lot of clutter, either. So I like to split my columns up along the sides. If I start to get too many icons, I'll make a folder. If I get a lot of random files that I don't know where I should put them, I'll throw them in the "misc junk" folder.

I wondered how long it'd be before we got an inevitable "hot chick" wallpaper
