I really agree with Angry Birds. In that vein, why do people think that iOS and mobile games are going to kill the (handheld) gaming market? If Angry Birds is the best mobile game, it's a sad place to be. Does no one remember playing flash games? But now it's better because you pay for them!

It's not going to kill the traditional market because the games are BETTER. It's going to kill the traditional market because companies are seeing that they can make more money with less effort.
I don't think the mobile market will ever truly replace the standard one... but it's already putting the hurt on, with companies like Sega shutting down all their extra divisions and making the mobile/digital market their primary focus. Sega may not have always had the best track record, but they're dangerously close to running themselves into the ground and shitting on whatever dignity they have left.

They didn't just milk that cow, they pulled it's tits off and beat it to death with them, then used them to beat a whole field of dead horses. Now the series seems like they are trying to replace Mega Man as the company's mascot with Ryu. Screw that crap with a broken-glass sword covered in table salt up the anus.

It's just growing. The Vita and the 3DS are doing fine enough as is, even though the 3DS had a rocky start it's selling really well now and it's just going to get better from here because all first party games are going digital, day and date. The whole Sega thing isn't the mobile market's fault, it's Sega's.

Of course I exaggerate. Nothing's being killed, but it IS making a difference and will continue to do so. Companies are foaming at the mouth trying to figure out how to get a piece of the Farmville pie. That shit is lucrative.
Sega's failing stocks and poor sales figures may be their fault, but they've had the mobile market glint in their eye for some time. Even if they hadn't shut down their extra divisions recently, they've still expressed a desire to put more focus on mobile games. It's only a matter of time.
Like I said before, there will always be a place for real games, and it's not as if this stuff is going to flat out murder gaming... but the more popular this shit gets, the more it'll start affecting the industry as a whole. It may be way too early to cry foul, but if you think these markets are mutually exclusive and don't have any impact on one another, you're wrong.

I never said it wasn't impacting it, but it's not really hurting the "real" gaming market either. Most of the people that play mobile games aren't the people that also read up on the new Uncharted, Zelda, Bioshock; whatever and buy console games. Sure, there is a bunch of overlap, even I have Words with Friends, but buying a handful of mobile games never stopped me from buying a console/handheld game.
Most of the people that play mobile games are people that don't play what we, for the past twenty years, have described as "video games," and if they have, they haven't played much.
When a big company like Sega can no longer put out AAA content for consoles-games that cost millions of dollars to make, it makes sense for them to work on smaller projects where the risk is smaller. We live in a sad time of the industry where "big" games need to have two or three sequels within a five-year span or else they are failures.
BUT. Don't care. :3 Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are here to stay and from what I've seen, none of them are dabbling in mobile gaming. Even if they were, I'm sure they'd give us more complete experiences than Angry Birds or Cut the Rope.

Truthfully mobile gaming is just the symptom of a much larger problem: This makes me so sad. And it just keeps getting worse. Little by little. Year by year.
