Don't Mess with Magnet Man

I tell her
That I think that she’s the one
Her answer
Is her brother with a loaded gun

If these magnets do what they say
How come I could never make her stay?

I am magnetically
Drawing my death to me
So why can’t my body
Reverse polarity?
You walk into my town
Waving that gun around
You want a fight
I’ll give you one tonight
I think you better not mess with Magnetman

She tells me
I’m sorry, I gotta Roll
Now I see
She’s broken what she stole

Still her words echo in my head
Watch yourself my brother wants you dead

I am magnetically
Drawing my death to me
So why can’t my body
Reverse polarity?

You walk into my town
Waving that gun around
You want a fight
I’ll give you one tonight
I think you better not mess with Magnetman

So it’s clear
That our folks don’t get along
Now you fear
What we had is wrong

Sure, my dad wants to rule the world
But can you let that get between us girl?

I am magnetically
Drawing my death to me
So why can’t my body
Reverse polarity?
You walk into my town
Waving that gun around
You want a fight
I’ll give you one tonight
I think you better not mess with Magnetman

Baby you’re all I think of baby
I can attract everything I see
But the one I love to me
Come back to me baby…

Surely this is the first time one of the Master Robot's has been even charaterized with the ability to feel a positive emotion. I mean, envy, rage, fear, pride, never have we associated the concept with one til this amazing song.

Now if he was only as strong as Crashman and had overcome his programming.

He's just attracted to her...

And Megaman is the typical overprotecting brother. I definitely don't think Magnet Man would have done anything evil had Roll stayed with him. Poor guy.

Not his fault, he's a magnet. He attracts everything he sees!

So apparently the official line is "why CAN'T my body reverse polarity?"

Originally, I was pretty back and forth on whether "can" or "can't" made the most sense (since I couldn't really hear one way or the other). Before the official lyrics were posted, I actually decided on "can", which translated the meaning of the line to:

"I am magnetically drawing my death to me, so why do I repel the one thing I want to attract?"

Questioning why his body reverses polarity shows Magnet Man as feeling helpless and out-of-control, focusing more on that frustration and perhaps stirring a lack of self-worth.

When the word becomes can't, I have to use a whole new line of thinking:

"I am magnetically drawing my death to me, so why can't I repel that and instead attract love?"

Questioning why his body CAN'T reverse polarity puts more focus more on his desire to attract Roll than his frustration for not being able to. Making him out to be more of a hopeless romantic.

Essentially, they boil down to saying the same message in two different ways, with two slightly different emotional mindsets.

Which one do you prefer?

Well, in the games, there's no evidence Magnet Man can repel. He only draws in.

But I like to put a tragic twist on things. In Megas canon, he normally can attract things as evidenced by the line, "I can attracted everything I see, but the one I love to me."

This means he is consciously choosing to attract death to himself. He can't reverse his polarity because he doesn't want to. He wants this death. He wants this fight. Maybe because he can't have Roll's love anymore, he'd rather choose death.

Well ALL magnets can repel and attract. That's what polarity's all about.

The use of the word polarity indicates he understands he CAN repel something at the expense of attracting the other.

So what he's saying is "why do I attract death/repel Roll?"

While I like what you're saying about him wanting to attract death, that would mean he ALSO wants to repel Roll, due to him asking why he can't reverse things (change polarity). I can't see him asking the question if the answer was simply "because I don't want to".

First of all... hi. I've been following The Megas for a long while, but it wasn't until I picked up the new album - and heard this song - that I decided to go ahead and register an account here. So... yeah, hiya.

Secondly, this is my favorite song on the whole album, easily. Not really talking about the lyrics, but just throwing that out there. It took me a good day or so to stop listening to this over and over and get moving on to the rest of the album.

As for the lyrics themselves, the only part that really throws me is the chorus, because it seems to jump rapidly from one subject to another. It seems like the first line should have been something more along the lines of "I am magnetically / drawing her back to me", which to me would make more logical sense flowing into the next line (though the second to third line at that point would still be a bit of a logical disconnect).

It could just be an issue with how I'm interpreting the lines. The consensus here seems to be that he's actively drawing death to himself as a result of his feelings, whereas I'm seeing that he's trying to attract Roll and is instead getting trouble. To an extent, my view is correct (I would presume)... but yeah, like I said, it just sorta throws me.

The *other* part that throws me is the timing of all the lines in the closing. No matter how many times I try to line myself up with them, I never can. The Megas actually have a very long history of doing that to me (Air Man, Bubble Man, Bomb Man... just to name a few).

Alright, here's how I see it.

Magnet man and Roll got a thang going. Both like each other, and you get that spark of love. But a la Romeo and Juliet, the powers-that-be outside of their love take control. Wily commands Magnet Man to fight, Mega Man tells Roll to back out. Roll begins to fear that her feelings are wrong; she loves a murderer/son of Wily/'Montague'. So she backs out, breaking Magnet Man's heart.

But, given the circumstances, Magnet Man keeps a glimmer of hope to the end. He knows that their love was true, and that it wasn't really Roll who didn't like him. Rather, it was circumstances out of their control, their respective 'families', that forced Roll to leave. Magnet Man wishes with his entire being that it could be different.

All Magnet Man wants is Roll. He really doesn't care about Wily's plans. Hence, it makes more sense for him to say can't. He hates the status quo, where he seems to be involuntarily walking down a path towards his end - the fight with Mega Man.

The chorus here makes me almost cry every time (in addition to being extrodinarily catchy). Like Crash Man, Magnet Man wants to fight against his program. Like Air Man, he has to live with how he's built, but this has a double meaning for Magnet Man. Not only does he fight by pulling Mega Man into himself, but he was 'built' into his role as one of Wily's sons. He can't change that. As a result, he literally pulls death towards him, repelling Roll at the same time.

The tragic thing is that he sees this coming. He knows death's coming his way. The line "So why can't my body reverse polarity" marks his feeling of helplessness; he can't change how he's built or the forces of nature. Filled with rage at the forces beyond his control, he focuses his anger on the only thing he can: Mega Man.

In the face of his 'death', drawing near, Magnet Man gives a resounding 'I refuse to die.' Mega Man wants a fight, does he? Don't fuck with Magnet Man.

Better not mess (fuck) with magnet man x3 accurately measures the level of his sheer rage at everything that's gone wrong.

Probably too many words and an overanalysis, but I definitely love the complexity of this song. I don't think I accurately (or could) conveyed everything I feel when I listen to this song. It's certainly very powerful.

--------------------------------------------

On a complete side note: Today I was testing out a new ride at the water park I work at. It's a hydromagnetic water coaster. Basically, they use magnet repulsion to fling the tube up the hills, then let gravity take its course. At the end, one of the guys asked me if I knew how it worked. To be funny, I said "It uses electromagnetic thingys" They laughed.

But what I really wanted to do was break out in Magnet Man lyrics :P

I agree with pretty much all of your main points. Like you, I see Magnet Man as sort of not giving two shits about Wily's plans for world domination and that Roll left more because of the situation rather than out of no longer loving him.

Problem is, the song also does make her out to be at least a little bit of a bitch, particularly the second verse. It's really all in how you interpret the tone of the lines, but I see the second verse showing that Roll has chosen to stay loyal to her family and the last thing she says comes off as more threatening than it was probably meant to be.

On something of a side note, I was really surprised not to find a "fuckin' magnets/how do they work?" jokes anywhere in the lyrics.

Even if she does love him, a la' Helios's delightful interpretation, that doesn't mean she's ALSO not a dumb bitch :)

I'VE SEEN IT HAPPEN OFTEN ENOUGH NOT TO RULE IT OUT. lol
