Mario Kart 7 is the definitive one for me.

Mario Kart Wii wasn't terrible or anything, but nothing beats playing co-op Double Dash. (As far a single-player experience goes, however, Mario Kart DS is easily the best.)

Co-op requires friends, and MK7 and DS require handhelds I don't own.

This is all assuming you haven't played various ports and re-releases of course.

also Smash Bros whatever who gives a shit

Yeah, JT basically nailed it. There was also T.H.U.G. 2 and American Wasteland. I don't remember which of the 3 I liked more.

If I've never played any of the RE games, would 4 be a suitable place to start?

I'd definitely recommend starting with REmake if possible, but if you want to skip straight to 4 that's fine, too. 4's story is all self contained for the most part and has little to do with the other games besides a few mentions of 'the raccoon city incident' and some returning characters. Stay away from RE0, though, that game is terrible.

If you have a Wii, the version of RE4 for it is really good. Sure it feels like you're pointing a flashlight at the TV, but there are classic controls and maybe even Gamecube controls.

I can confirm that yes, a game that came out originally on the Gamecube has full support for the Gamecube controller.

Unlike a certain other Wii port of a popular game we won't speak of.

That's a good point, if you don't like the old style gameplay listen to JT and play the darkside chronicles.

Revelations is really good so far too. It kind of blends old and new RE styles.

Can't really say I KNOW whether I like the old style gameplay or not, since I haven't played ANY RE game before... but I think I will check out 4, and if I like it, I'll go from there.

Basically the controls for the older games have been described at tank controls since to shoot you have to hold a button to make him raise his weapon, use the d-pad or analogue stick to aim, and press another button to fire. That and you have set screens, meaning the camera doesn't follow you around. You run into the shot at whatever angle it is and run out of it into another. I like this style just because it adds to the tension of not knowing whats in the next shot and you can only rely on what you hear.
