It's hard to describe. You move around on map squares, and sometimes can do actions that may or may not cost action points, which you gain by doing well in enemy encounters. You increase your stats by mastering different weapons and learning their hidden abilities, which lets you get through battles easier and get more action points to use on the map, which can let you get newer better equipment or see scenes you might miss or what have you.
Every character except the main protagonist is female and there's a slight dating sim element wherein whichever girl likes you the most, you'll get their specific ending. It's kind of a dumb and pointless feature.

Been playing the shit out of Pokemon White, and got 5 games with the DS I bought: Mario 64, Pokemon Diamond, Animal Crossing, LoZ: Phantom Hourglass, and GTA: Chinatown. Recommend me some games to get later, just off the top of my head:
