A lot of games actually do something similar already. Little Big Planet has several different tracks for each of its songs that it can layer dynamically, and I'm sure it's not the only one.

And I know that Mass Effect does similar things as well.
BUT Japanese games are in my opinion, the opposite of that stereotype.
But, heck, I want to try that sort of thing on the Touhou games.

The best Sonic characterization I've ever seen.
Fuck the haters, hate the fuckers.

Has anyone played the 3DS version? Any good? I've heard mixed things.

instead of modern and classic levels you probably have sonic rush and sonic rush levels.

What I've heard about it is that the classic stuff is pretty much the same but the modern gameplay is sort of Rush-y but with 3d elements as well? I dunno. Different levels though, like Mushroom Hill and Radical Highway instead of Sky Sanctuary and City Escape, for example.

Generations was fantastic. They took stages from shitty Sonic games and made them good in 3D as well as 2D. Possibly my favorite Sonic game? Hopefully with this and Colors, Sonic Team is going to start doing well again.
I got the 3DS version for my friend, and she really likes it. I only played the first Rush, but it was really good, and it's got the tubey, 3D special stages as well as some online play?

I was surprisingly disappointed with Generations, to be perfectly honest.
Maybe I got my hopes up a little too high riding the Anniversary hype train all year, but for most of the game I just couldn't stop thinking about how much more fun I had with Sonic Colors.
The level design was brilliant for the most part, but something about the experience just felt... lacking. Maybe it was the lack of classic stages, or the fact that the cutscenes/nonexistent story/final boss were so impossibly weak. Maybe it was the fact that the game was so short, and that the S-ranks were practically force-fed to you without requiring ANY effort at all.
I dunno man, I just dunno.
On the plus side, the soundtrack is phenomenal, particularly some of the bonus/mission tracks, and the ability to use custom music for each stage was INGENIOUS. A lot of the side-missions were kind of stupid, but there were some that were so neat/creative I actually found myself wishing they had incorporated some of those elements into the main game, for a splash of diversity.
This game desperately needs some DLC though. I probably could have forgiven ALL of it's shortcomings if only it had more content. I 100%'d the damn thing within the first week, and I can't remember having much difficulty doing so.

It's either a short but awesome game every year or two (Colors/Generations), a decent length but awesome game every three of four years which is basically spent just making track, or a decently fun game with tons of filler (Unleashed).
I, for one, am perfectly content with a short game.
Final boss was trash though. Fortunately you can just turn on some Open Your Heart/Live and Learn/What I'm Made Of and breeze through it in about 3-4 minutes once you learn the tricks.

I see your point, but somehow I just felt like Colors had more oomph. It's probably just a personal thing though, given the overall reception of each.

Colors had more impressive stages from time to time, but I feel like Generations was a more well-balanced package? Colors would have you in a stage that made you FREAK. OUT. from how insane it was, and then a couple stages later you'd be in a totally 2D stage using the stupidest powerup in the game for two minutes. I thought Generations was good at making all of the stages actually feel like full stages?
I'm glad that it's not as hard to get S ranks, though. XD That always made me so mad as a kid; I so wanted Green Hill Zone but you had to perfect every mission and they were so hard.

You didn't miss out on much, GHZ in SA2 totally wasn't worth all the effort.
